Scope and Contents

From the Record Group:

The Dr. Carrol Krause records (1969-1981) holds the files from the Office of the Provost and upper administration during Dakota State College's time as a branch of the University of South Dakota. Of particular note, these records contain the proposals for DSC's merger and investigations into the school's future conducted by the South Dakota Board of Regents.

Despite the efforts of previous presidents Dr. Flaum and Dr. Bowes, the BOR voted to place DSC under the jurisdiction of USD in 1974. Dr. Richard Bowen was the president of both schools, and Dr. Carrol Krause served as DSC's Provost. During this time, the BOR would propose three possible alternatives for DSC: stay as a branch of USD, merge with South Dakota State University, or gain back its autonomy. After combatting multiple attempts at closure, DSC would once again be its own college in 1978.
