Biography
Carrol Francis Krause was born in 1936, in Petersburg, Nebraska. He was one of eleven children born to John and Rose Krause. He graduated from St. John's High School in Petersburg; received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Wayne State College and a doctorate from the University of Nebraska. He was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Miami. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, including one year in Korea, and used the G.I. bill to help finance his education. Krause married Joan Taylor in 1957. They had six children.
Krause's previous experience in the field of education was extremely varied and included acting as the superintendent at Gresham and Yutan chools; the high school principal at Mead, Nebraska; and teaching science at Seward, Nebraska. Krause then served as Chairman of the Division of Education and Psychology at Southern State College in Springfield, SD, before becoming Provost of the University of South Dakota at Springfield and Vermillion in July of 1971.
Krause became Provost of Dakota State College on July 1, 1974, when DSC was administratively attached to the University of South Dakota.
Krause later became Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Montana for eight years before retiring. He came out of retirement to accept the position of the Executive Director of the Nebraska State College System and served for 10 years before again retiring. He was called out of retirement twice to serve as Interim President of Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD, and again as Interim Commissioner of Higher Education in Montana.
Krause was the Chairman of the State Advisory Council on Vocational Education; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Family Training Center in Glasgow, Montana; member of the Board of Directors of the Mundt Foundation; and Regional Representative for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the Elks, the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce and the Springfield Development Corporation as well as numerous other fraternal, community and professional groups.
Krause passed away in 2014 in Rapid City, SD.
