Biographical / Historical
Laurence Samuel Flaum was born in El Paso, Texas, on February 11, 1911, to Boris and Belle Flaum. In 1937, he married Hazel Catherine Anderson. They had two daughters. He attended the Universities of Texas and Arizona and then went to Columbia University from which he obtained both his A.B. and M.A. degrees. He then earned his Ed.D. at Colorado State College.
Flaum became a high school principal and superintendent of schools in New York and later in Nebraska. He was Director of Education at Drake University for 12 years. He was Dean of College at Minot State College in Minot, ND, for four years.
From 1962-1967, Flaum was president of General Beadle State College. While in Madison, he belonged to Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Masons, Elks, Kiwanis and the Presbyterian Church.
Flaum died on December 29, 1996, in Charleston, SC, at the age of 85.
